Wood River MTB Wins State!
Updated on 10/10/2022
The WR MTB Team participated in the National Interscholastic Cycling Association Idaho State Championships this weekend. Twenty-seven schools participated with just over 900 riders racing the four-mile course at Bogus Basin. WR went undefeated this season and crushed the competition at State, bringing home the title of Idaho State Champions (for the fifth time).
Our riders suffered during the climbs and pinned the descents. We had many top ten riders: JV2 rider Claire Shiver placed 1oth, Hudson Emery took 8th in freshman, Wyatt Dunn had a tough race and placed 9th in JV1, Molly Maybach (her first year riding) earned a respectable 6th in JV1, Eloise Pendl-Hebert placed 10th in Varsity, Zach Quesnel podiumed in 5th with JV1, Lila Hess pinned all three laps in varsity and took 9th, while Mazzy Conners placed 3rd in JV1. Oliver Smith held his own until the final lap and placed 4th in varsity. Page DeHart had an impressive 3rd place finish in varsity while Ruby Smith took 2nd in varsity.

WR MTB Team - Race #4 Soldier Mountain 9/17/2022
The WR MTB Team raced one of the toughest courses in Idaho this past weekend. Twenty schools participated in this battle of climbing and descending the single track at Soldier Mountain. The owners of Soldier Mountain were exceptionally welcoming and groomed the course for all the riders. It consisted of a two-mile climb of 1,000’ with a descent resembling an epic run out of Whistler. The freshman and Junior Varsity categories completed two laps while the Varsity crew raced three laps, 3,000’ vertical, and 15 miles of pure fun (or a pain zone few have ever seen).
WR took another first place this weekend with 4,314 points. McCall was not far behind 4,071 points (243-point gap). Teton Valley Composite was 3rd with 3,944 pts and Boise took 4th with 3,930pts.
Ruby and Oliver Smith danced on their pedals for all three laps completing the course in 1st and 2nd place. Lila Hess, our own president, cranked it at her home (cabin) turf taking 4th in varsity. Eloise Pendl-Hebert took 5th (and the “hammer of the week” for her grit on the last climb - dropping McCall in the final mile). Mazzy Conners and Ella Shaughnessy crushed the course in the JV category with a 2nd and 3rd place finish. Zach Quesnel took the men's “Hammer of the Week” in the JV1 category. He was caught in a crash at the start, fell back to 20th position, and on the first climb passed 15 riders finishing 3rd overall. Holden “Tailwhip” Archie cranked out an 8th-place finish for the varsity. Claire Shiver stood proudly on the podium with a 5th-place finish in the JV2 category for the girls. David Mandeville had the race of his life taking 7th overall. Hudson Emery hung on to the leader’s wheel throughout the race and stood 2nd on the podium for the freshman. Spencer Ferries pinned the fastest time on the course for his first lap but cramped up on the second lap.
Our last race of the season is the Idaho State Championships on October 8th, at Bogus Basin. Twenty-six teams will attend this race where the state champs will be crowned.
